HJHansen Recycling Group is massively expanding at the port of Aalborg.
Press release, September 28th, 2023
The recycling company HJHansen Recycling Group is expanding at the port of Aalborg with a new harbor site, from which they will be able to ship up to 30,000 tons of iron and metal for recycling. This is a significant gain for the North Jutland scrap suppliers and the development of the entire port area.
Since 1996, HJHansen Recycling Group has had a harbor site at Aalborg harbor, from which the company has so far been able to ship coasters and sea containers with iron and metal scrap both at home and abroad. In collaboration with the Port of Aalborg, which is behind the operation of Aalborg harbor, the company is establishing its new site of 15,600 m2 in the port’s new quay area, which has been constructed to be as sustainable as possible in the production. The expansion enables HJHansen Recycling Group to ship large deep-sea cargoes of up to 30,000 tons in the future. It is the company’s third deep-sea terminal in Denmark, which complements the two existing terminals, from which they sent up to 50,000 tons of iron for recycling several times a month.
The path to recycling becomes shorter
“Aalborg is a strategically important position, not only for us and our suppliers, but also the environment, since we can collect and ship more, thus minimizing the environmental impact of the scrap, as the path to recycling becomes shorter,” says Mogens Bach Christensen, CEO of HJHansen Recycling Group.
With the new deep-sea terminal, HJHansen Recycling Group emphasizes that they are focusing on shipping by water when materials are sent for recycling. “With this site, we get greater capacity and a wider range of transport possibilities. This flexibility will be a great strength for us,” explains Mogens Bach Christensen.
Strengthens the growth in the entire area
Port of Aalborg is also excited about the company’s expansion. “For several years, we have had a close collaboration with HJHansen Recycling Group, and it is a great pleasure to see them expand significantly here at the port. They are an important part of a robust recycling industry at the port. Their growth strengthens the whole area and thus also the other recycling companies here at the port,” says Michael Rosenkilde Lind, Chief Commercial Officer at the Port of Aalborg, and continues:
“Furthermore, we are looking forward to HJHansen Recycling Group’s focus on using this new site as a traffic hub – not just for us, but also for the rest of North Jutland’s businesses.”
Until the site can be put into use, HJHansen Recycling Group will continue to operate its current location at Aalborg harbor. The opening of the new deep-sea terminal is expected to take place in 2024.
